Medisolae Topic Centre
The EU Topic Centre is established and managed by the Higher Educational Institution (NTUA), under National Laws of Greece and represent a Legal entity of Public Right. It also acts in accordance with National and EU legislation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) that follows EU policies recommendations in order to assist local authorities in implementing of ICZM policies of the EU Laws and the Recommendations of the EU ICZM Expert Group. Its main purpose is the coordination, directing, implementation and attaining of the objectives of Medisolae project. Furthermore, it contributes to the application of methodologies concerning integrated management in the Mediterranean and assists the institutional capacity building of responsible Agencies. It would also provide assistance in the institutional development and support to the Agencies Responsible for the sustainable development, management and protection of small islands. Another advantage is to strengthen of the coastal environmental monitoring capacities of Mediterranean islands, and implement modern information systems in support of protection and sustainable management of coastal environments. Moreover, it will become the centre for the collection and management of data and relevant information on all levels (environmental, socioeconomic, engineering, cultural, etc) as well as to keep and maintain all records and accounts of project operations for the Mediterranean islands. The stakeholders would benefit from the organization of workshops, conferences, training and information days on ICZM issues of the Mediterranean basin. All the above would be assisted by the formation of a Spatial Database Infrastructure (SDI), under the recommendations of the EC INSPIRE Directive, which will review all standards on ICZM and decide on concerted non-overlapping policies on ICZM of the islands.
